Podcast: The Moth

Episode: Vy Higginsen: A Common Ancestor

A true story about a woman, Vy Higgisen, who goes on a quest to learn about her family’s ancestry. Seeing her grandmother without her signature velvet scarf and not really recognizing her, Vy questioned where she came from. It’s an interesting, funny, and beautiful story that’s worth a quick listen.

Podcast: Joe Rogan Experience

Episode: #974 – Megan Phelps-Roper

Submitted by: Tim Pickerill (These American Gods, Watchers on the Couch)

Yes, that Phelps. Megan Phelps-Roper is the granddaughter of Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church. It came out last week, but I didn’t listen to it until right after last week’s Aural was posted. It’s a fanscinating listen, where you find out why Megan and her sister left the church, and how somehow Twitter isn’t a complete fucking cesspool.

Episode: 103: Smegumacation

Submitted by: Tim Pickerill (These American Gods, The Watchers on the Couch)

“Unlike last week, I didn’t listen to anything this week that really inspired, or interested me this week. So I’m going for funny. Edumacation this week brings has an hilarious ‘What If’ about the band Toto (who doesn’t suck), and the return of the ‘potato’ bit.”

Podcast: The Todd Glass Show

Episode: Episode 300

Podcast: Radiolab

Episode: Null and Void

Submitted by: Sarah Pickerill (These American Gods, The Watchers on the Couch)

“A really interesting look into jury nullification. This is something you could be arrested for talking about. It starts with a woman that served jury duty and had a conflict of conscience when the rest of the jury wanted to convict the defendant. What happened next was really unusual.”

Podcast: The Aubrey Marcus Podcast

Episode: #98: No More Excuses! 40 Minutes of Fire with Gary Vee

Submitted by: Tim Pickerill (These American Gods, The Watchers on the Couch)

” ‘I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.’ – Bilbo Baggins.

That’s the quote that has been in my head the past couple weeks, as I’ve found myself overcommited on projects and just taking on more than I can reasonably do. To the point where I don’t do anything. Except for obsess over the things I need to do. I’ve been a fan of Gary Vaynerchuk for a few months now. I don’t even remember how I discovered him, but I know I was late to the party. I don’t consider myself an entreprenuer, although who knows what may happen as Onyx Edge Studios continues. But this episode kind of lit that fire under my ass to get moving. No, I didn’t quit my job to podcast full time or anything like that. I opened up that word processor with the ‘in progress’ novel I’ve been working on for the past few years, and commited to finishing it.”

Podcast: Waking Up with Sam Harris

Episode: What is Technology Doing to Us?

Submitted by: Jordan Wakefield (The High Files)

“Technology is not synonymous with benevolence. Technological innovation, especially in the domain of computer technology, has done so many good things for us that we often forget to watch for associated dangers. With that in mind, I think this episode of the Waking Up podcast should be required listening for anyone who uses any form of internet-based service, be it a smartphone or streaming video player.”

Podcast: The Todd Glass Show

Episode: 298 – Eddie Pepitone

Submitted by: Chris Naes (Bacon and Naes)

“Todd’s podcast is all about silliness. Listen for the jingles and the reverb, stay for the laughs. Seriously this episode is great.”

Podcast: COMEDY BANG BANG

Episode: #487 – Genie Awareness

Submitted by: Tim Pickerill (These American Gods, The Watchers on the Couch, ONedge)

“I’ve listened to a lot of really long podcasts this week, as well as Friday Aural submissions from last week (I binged listened to Nerd Poker.) This is one of my favorites from this week, that doesn’t require you to listen to previous episodes. What happens when Haley Joel Osment and Scott Aukerman meet the ‘Cash Me Ousside/Howbow Dah’ girl’s sister?

I also recommend the 8th anniversary episode of CBB #485. I listened to that one right after the last Friday Aural went up and laughed so hard I couldn’t breathe. My favorite part of these improv podcasts are when one of the performers make the others break character from laughter.”

Friday Aural #4 – Best Podcasts of the Week for 5/12/2017

The Friday Aural for 5/12/17

Podcast: Nerd Poker

Episode: Episode 1 – Amynna

Submitted by: Chris Naes (Bacon and Naes)

“Brian Posehn and friends play D&D. It sounds good and it IS good.”

Album: Adam Hunter – Inappropriate

Submitted by: Brandon Messmer (The Rent is Due)

“I was actually surprised that there were so many jokes. Much like Mitch Hedberg but there were a lot of one liners, but there were no pauses in between. The crowd at the show also doesn’t really understand what’s going on so Adam has to explain quite a few jokes which infuriates him. It’s quite the laugh if you like fast paced man humor.”

Podcast: The Joe Rogan Experience

Episode: #958 Jordan Petersen

Submitted by: Jordan Wakefield (The High Files)

“Normally, I try to abstain recommending JRE episodes because they don’t really need a publicity push. However, this episode is a must listen in my opinion, especially if you’re a fan of The High Files. Jordan Petersen shares a wealth of knowledge in a very clear and easy to follow manner. He touches on some of my favorite subjects including Post-Modernism, Literary Archetypes, Biblical Narrative, and Jungian Psychology. Go deep, High Filers! This is an incredible journey!”

Podcast: My Brother, My Brother and Me

Episode: 354: Beanfreak

Submitted by: Tim Pickerill (These American Gods, The Watchers on the Couch, ONedge)

“‘J. Wake’ took my first pick, so I second the JRE episode. I haven’t listened to many podcasts this week as I increased video/social media production on TAG this week. So in lieu of not being able to pick the one that made me think the most, I’ll pick the one that made me laugh the most. MBMBaM is one of my favorite podcasts that was introduced to me by my wife.

Podcast: WTF with Marc Maron

Episode: Mark Mothersbaugh

Submitted by: Chris Naes (Bacon and Naes)

“WTF 807 with Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO. Mark is the creative genius behind DEVO as well as several other interesting tv shows and films. “Whip It!” was a song with a political agenda?!”

Podcast: Monday Morning Podcast

Episode: Thursday Afternoon Just Before Friday Monday Morning Podcast 5-4-17

Submitted by: Brandon Messmer (Rent is Due)

“This week Bill discusses hockey and asks his wife to join him on the podcast. When she does, they have a very real very entertaining fight over household chores. You can almost smell the divorce papers when you listen to this.”

Podcast: School Sucks Project

Episode: The Fall of the “Scientific” Political Finger Puppet (A Rant)

Submitted by: Jordan Wakefield (The High Files)

“Some of you may not agree with this, but as Brandon and I discussed at my house on Monday, it is very important to incorporate different information into your viewpoint. So please listen to this episode of the School Sucks podcast. It is episode 490. Here is the brief description from the website: “On Neil deGrasse Tyson, Bill Nye Saves the World (Netflix), and other science and sex junk.” I watched the first episode of the new Bill Nye series and was immediately turned off when the audience started dramatically “ooo”ing and “ahhh”ing as Nye pulled out mundane lab equipment before demonstrating anything. I thought it was very patronizing. This episode of the School Sucks podcast is a condemnation of that type of superiority complex, not of science itself.”

Podcast: The Drunken Taoist

Episode: EPISODE 110 – SARA FRAZETTA ABOUT THE LEGENDARY CAREER OF FRANK FRAZETTA

Submitted by: Tim Pickerill (These American Gods // The Watchers on the Couch // ONedge)

“I discovered Daniele Bolelli through Joe Rogan’s podcast years ago, and quickly became a fan of the man.
His thoughts, his humor, his accent, and his love of Conan the Barbarian. Sara Frazetta is the granddaughter of Frank Frazetta, a legendary sci-fi and fantasy artist, well known for his Conan art. Album covers, book covers, movie posters, you name it, Frazetta did it. This is an episode of the life and career of an epic artist, and I hope you find it as enjoyable as I did.”

Podcast: Comedy Bang Bang

Episode: #484 Pre-Chowder

Submitted by: Tim Pickerill (The Watchers on the Couch, ONedge)

“CBB is a fantastic improv podcast. I’m always jealous of people that can do improv. This episode has Jason Mantzoukas, who played Rafi on the FX show The League, and Paul F. Thompkins. Paul is a frequent guest on the show, and in this episode he is reprising his role as Andrew Lloyd Weber.”

ONedge is On iTunes!

Hey everyone, it’s Tim. Just wanted to pop in to announce that my new series ONedge: Inside ONYXedge Studios has officially “launched.”
I know, I know. The blog has been available on YouTube, and the audio has been available on our website, Soundcloud, and Spreaker for a few weeks now. But now, it’s available on all (or at least most) of the big podcasting platforms: iTunes, Google Play, and Stitcher. Which means if it’s not already on your podcast listening app of choice, it should be within the next few days.

If you’ve been following ONedge developments, I mentioned in a previous post and on the show itself, that I wanted to wait until there was enough of a following to give me a ratings/reviews boost on iTunes to try and get the show into the New and Noteworthy section.

Despite all the platforms out there to consume audio content, iTunes is still the Big Daddy Kane of the podcast distribution world. Aspiring podcasters covet the New and Noteworthy section of the iTunes Store. A magical place where a podcast will be visible for about 8 weeks in your chosen category, and the only thing you need to do is get a lot of up front subscribers, 5 star ratings, and reviews.

If you are a podcaster, or thinking about starting a podcast, that’s what nearly everyone with a Podcast Course will tell you… next to “defining your avatar.” You have a few critical weeks at the beginning to really get your show out there, and you need the ratings, reviews, and subscribers to get to that hot spot.

Thing is… it’s not true. At least according to this article and some other folks in the Podcaster Community on Facebook. So I decided to scrap the whole soft launch idea, and just put the show out there. Of course, ratings and reviews are always welcome, and they help give a podcast credibility when people are searching for something to listen to, so feel free to help in that way if you are so inclined.

The best way to support ONedge though, is to let me know what you’d like to know. It is, after all, a show about what we are doing here at the studio across all of our programming.
